Dark Souls has been a smash hit for developer FromSoftware, with three games under their belt for the tough-as-nails series, which has likely resulted in more in-game deaths than many other games combined. Despite the punishing gameplay, gamers just keep coming back for more and while it seemed like the third entry would be the last, don’t count it out yet. President of FromSoftware and director of Dark Souls 3, Hidetaka Miyazaki, has said that he would like to return to the series before he retires.
“This game marks a major “turning point” within the Dark Souls series,” said Miyazaki in a recent interview with Gamespot. “Just as it’s been announced, we have two DLCs planned, but as it stands now, I’m not thinking about making any sequels or spin-offs. That applies to Bloodborne as well.””I keep referring to the series as a “turning point,” and I’m avoiding
“I keep referring to the series as a “turning point,” and I’m avoiding use of the word “finish,” since saying it would completely “finish” the series. If someone says they want to make a Dark Souls game using the latest in technology, and if it is sufficiently attractive, then it wouldn’t be fair for me to just finish the series.”
It tricky, as with Bandai Namco owning the IP, the game could move on without FromSoftware, but that would be a shame for all involved. For now, it looks like the studio would be working on something fresh.
“To add, I can’t deny the fact that, maybe down the line, I want to go back to the series and make one more game before I retire,” he added. “I don’t want to be branded a liar if that happens [laughs].”
So there you have it, perhaps in the not too distant future, the masters of punishing gameplay may return to our screens and we really hope they do.
