The opening section of 2016’s critically acclaimed Hitman is now available for free. As of today, the game’s Intro Pack is downloadable for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, totally gratis. This is developer IO Interactive’s first big move since it gained its independence from previous owner Square Enix.
IO Interactive says:
“The ICA Facility will be available as a free download on PS4, Xbox One and PC starting today – and we’re extremely excited to see more players try the game. The download includes absolutely everything that we’ve released for that location; two story missions (including all cut-scenes), two Escalation Contracts, more than 40 challenges, 17 achievements and trophies, plus thousands of player-created missions in Contracts Mode – all of that is now available completely free of charge.
Players who download the ICA Facility for free will be able to keep all of their progress when they upgrade to the full game – plus we’ve lined up some discounts on the full game to make this a great time to buy. We’re talking up to 60% off on some platforms!”
The Intro Pack includes:
- One location
- Two story missions
- Two Escalation contracts
- Over 40 challenges
- 17 trophies/achievements
IO Interactive was put up for sale by Square Enix in May. The company issued the following statement:
“To maximise player satisfaction as well as market potential going forward, we are focusing our resources and energies on key franchises and studios. As a result, the Company has regrettably decided to withdraw from the business of IO INTERACTIVE A/S, a wholly‐owned subsidiary and a Danish corporation, as of March 31, 2017.”
Despite Hitman’s great reviews, the game’s sales figures were disappointing, no doubt harmed by its episodic structure. This motivated Square Enix to sacrifice the game’s developer. Thankfully, IO Interactive was able to negotiate its own buyout with Square. As a result, IO has become an independent studio. It has also retained the rights to the Hitman franchise.
The Hitman Intro Pack is available for free from Steam, Microsoft Store, and PlayStation Store now.
