The Simpsons has many claims to its name. It’s one of the most popular TV shows in the world and has run for an incredible 26 seasons with more on the way. Now it’s going down as a side note in science books, as it seems Homer Simpson is quite the unlikely scientist!
He may have been into space, traveled through time and more, but all this was in the realm of a cartoon. However, there was one episode that featured some very real world mathematics, which very closely predicted the mass of the elusive Higgs Boson particle – 14 years before it was actually discovered!
“The Simpsons is the most mathematical TV show on prime-time television in history. A lot of the writers on The Simpsons are mathematicians,” said Simon Singh, the author of The Simpsons and their Mathematical Secrets. “That equation predicts the mass of the Higgs boson. If you work it out, you get the mass of a Higgs boson that’s only a bit larger than the nano-mass of a Higgs boson actually is. It’s kind of amazing as Homer makes this prediction 14 years before it was discovered.” he added.
There’s a lot of hidden messages in the Simpsons, but this is by far one of the best ever. I wonder if the writer who made up the equation knew he was onto something?
