House of Cards was a massive hit for Netflix. Representing what was (more or less) their first self-produced show, its take-off should in no small part be credited as a major factor in Netflix’s success.
Unfortunately, recent events involving its lead character, played by Kevin Spacey have led to Netflix, at least temporarily, pulling the show from its streaming service.
While I’m not going to get into the whole affair in regards to why it was pulled, I would note that it is, to the best of my knowledge, still only based on allegations.
Fortunately for Netflix, they have seen one of their other shows, Stranger Things, successfully fill the void.
The problems with Kevin Spacey, however, did give Netflix a problem. How can you continue a series if your lead character is facing some serious accusations? They can’t after all just drop a piano on him as happened to Charlie Sheen and Two and a Half Men.
Well, the short answer is, I have no idea. In a report via Polygon, however, Netflix has confirmed that they plan to conclude the series over an 8-episode finale. They have in addition confirmed that Kevin Spacey will have no involvement in those episodes.
Netflix has yet to confirm how they plan to get around this and frankly I have no idea how they will either. While some shows have been able to continue without main characters, they are often worse for it.
While Netflix continues to offer brand new shows including some excellent looking sci-fi productions, ultimately, I wonder if they would have perhaps been better just letting House of Cards end unsatisfactorily rather than potentially badly.
I mean, the Soprano’s did it.
What do you think? How could they continue without Kevin Spacey? Does the show have any hope of working? – Let us know in the comments!
