HP P900 1TB Portable SSD Review

How Much Does it Cost?
Unfortunately, this drive isn’t available in the UK right now but is coming soon, so we will update this review with appropriate pricing as soon as they are. However, prices in China are currently just under $70 for the 1TB model and I expect it’ll be priced competitively when it is released here.
Overview
This is a good drive, nothing particularly extreme, but looking at the read and write speeds it’s broadly competitive for a reasonable price. However, the lack of a proper DRAM cache and the fact that quite a few of the supported devices don’t support the USB 2×2 interface that it features, you can’t always get the best performance out of it on console, mobile devices, etc. However, if you do have a modern camera, laptop or PC that supports it, it’s great for moving lots of files around reasonably quickly and easily.
The build quality is fantastic though, with a colourful aluminium case that doubles as a protective heatsink. It’s durable enough to be put into your pocket, chucked in your bag, or left on your desk. If you want something more rugged for all-weather conditions and IP rating, this isn’t for you, but I think that is fairly reflected in the price, much in the same way the DRAM-less design is.
With up to 2000 MB/s read and write, it’s ideal for moving lots of files around and is even capable of being used to directly play games from, so a great way of expanding the storage of small form factor systems and laptops where adding additional drives internally may not be possible. Of course, if you need all your media files, video editing clips, audio and more to be available to use between multiple systems, then it’s certainly well suited to that task.
Should I Buy One?
Hopefully, HP get this into the UK soon. I mean, we know it is coming, otherwise, they wouldn’t have sent it to us for review, and having put it through its paces, it certainly delivers on build quality, design and performance for a reasonable price. Plus, with such a compact form factor and lightweight design, it’s very practical too, and we already have one tucked away on the side of our Black Magic 12K camera in the studio for recording and offloading video from our studio, and it’s been working great!
