HP to drop out of computing

The multinational information technology corporation Hewlett-Packard has confirmed its plans to stop making PCs, tablets and phones and instead refocus on software.

HP said that it is moving out of the computer making to refocus on the more profitable software lines, as a matter of fact the US company has agreed to buy the UK software firm Autonomy for £7.1bn ($11.7bn).

While HP launched a smartphone competitor to the iPhone, equipped with its own webOS, this product didn’t find much “love” from the costumers and the same thing happened for its tablets, with sales being extremely low. HP, on the other hand, didn’t have much trouble in its PC sales which makes it a rather surprising move.

The US company has also said it was considering selling its personal system group saying it “will consider a broad range of options that may include, among others, a full or partial separation… from HP through a spin-off or other transaction”.

Some rumors name various firms as being keen to buy parts of HP if it were to break-up.

Is this the end of a giant, or the beginning of something better?
