HTC have been clinging onto life ever since they required a bailout from the Taiwanese Central Bank in August last year. Now The Verge reports that things aren’t getting any better as HTC have laid off 20% of their staff in America. Over in the USA HTC has around 150 employees and they’ve axed 30 – that’s 20% of the overall total. HTC responded with a statement to The Verge stating that it was:
“decisive action … to streamline and optimize our organization and improve efficiencies after several years of aggressive growth.”
HTC America’s President, Jason Mackenzie told employees that the lay offs were:
“part of a broader plan to simplify our organization, sharpen our teams focus, improve our speed in decision-making, and drive greater empowerment through our team, while reducing our overall cost structure.”
HTC have had a tough time in recent years facing falling profits and high profile departures, as well as internal dissent blaming CEO Peter Chou for the company’s troubles. Despite the success of the HTC One flagship smartphone 2013 looks set to be one of HTC’s poorest years on record.
