HTC is bundling the VR version of Bethesda’s RPG sequel Fallout 4 with the Vive headset. Fallout 4 VR is the core game “fully reimagined for virtual reality”. The fact that one of the most popular PC games is coming to virtual reality is a huge boost to VR, which is suffering lower-than-anticipated sales in 2017. In fact, Vive itself dropped its price by £200 in the last year.
“Fallout 4, the legendary post-apocalyptic adventure from Bethesda Game Studios and winner of more than 200 ‘Best Of’ awards, including the DICE and BAFTA Game of the Year, comes in its entirety to VR. Fallout 4 VR, winner of the Best VR Game at Gamescom 2017, includes the complete core game with all-new combat, crafting, and building systems fully reimagined for virtual reality. The freedom of exploring the wasteland comes alive like never before.”
In adapting Fallout 4 to VR, Bethesda made some key changes. Specifically, VATS, rather than turning combat into a turn-based attack, now slows down time instead. Old VATS zooms in, while new VR VATS retains normal camera distance. The purpose here is to protect the immersion by not breaking the camera away from the player’s view.
The HTC Vive Fallout 4 VR bundle is out for pre-order now, priced £599. However, existing Vive owners can access buy the game and get three months free for Viveport subscription service. Fallout 4 VR launches on 12th December for £39.99.
