S3 Graphics has had an uncertain future since VIA Technologies sold its stake in the company last June. Since then S3 Graphics has had a multitude of patent battles with Apple which saw an initial court ruling that stated Apple was infringing on S3 Graphics patents. However, the initial decision was overruled and Apple were deemed not to be infringing.
Despite the overturning of the decision, HTC has still decided to go ahead with the acquisition of S3 Graphics in a deal believed to be worth $300 million. The main driving force behind the deal is HTC’s motivation to acquire S3 Graphics’ extensive portfolio of 270 patents, some of which are currently licensed to Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft.
