Drones can be used for a variety of purposes, whether we’re talking about filming from unique perspectives, snapping incredible photos or spying on our neighbors. However, even the most expensive drones out there have a major weakness when it comes to battery life. It’s hard to find a drone that can remain airborne for more than 25 minutes, and that’s because batteries can’t really cope with powering 4 small motors for too long, especially if the drone is carrying some extra weight.
Fortunately, a company called Horizon Unmanned Systems unveiled a special kind of drone not too long ago, a drone that can stay up in the air for up to four hours. Powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, the Hycopter makes use of 4.2 ounces of hydrogen gas stored at 5,067 PSI. The structural tubing that contains the gas is made out of carbon fiber, which is one of the toughest materials out there. This particular hydrogen amount should ensure just as much power as 6.6 pounds of lithium batteries, which is definitely impressive.
The drone itself will tip the scales at 11 pounds and will boast 800W of climb power as well as 375W of hover power. The bad news is that HUS has not yet tested a prototype for this gadget, which means that consumers will have to wait quite a bit before they will be able to get their hands one.
