HyperX Alloy FPS Mechanical Gaming Keyboard Review

Final Thoughts

Price

The HyperX Allow FPS Mechanical Gaming Keyboard is available from Amazon for just £99.95, and now comes in Cherry MX Blue, Brown, or Red switch variants, so you can easily find the one that best suited to your style. It’s not cheap at close to £100, but the build quality alone goes a long way to justifying the retail price.

Overview

While the latest keyboard from HyperX may not be the most innovative, it’s still a fantastic keyboard for work and play. Think of it like the racing version of a sports car. It’s a little slimmer, it’s more ergonomic, it has modular parts with its detachable cable and custom key caps, and it’s built from more expensive materials. £99 may not be loose change for a lot of people, but when you lay hands on the solid steel chassis that makes up this keyboard, you’ll know you made the right choice to buy one.

This is every bit the pro gaming keyboard it sets out to be. It’s certainly tournament friendly, and while it has a bit of a no-frills approach, it still sneaks in a few features like LED lighting controls and multimedia controls via FN-shift functions. It doesn’t use desktop software to tweak settings, it doesn’t need drivers, you just plug in and play, making it very tournament friendly. The slimmer design also makes it easier to put into your bag and transport, and no worry about it snapping, as that steel frame will take a few hard knocks and bumps without issue.

Performance isn’t an issue for this keyboard, as it comes equipped with a choice of the well-tried and tested Cherry MX switches. Good for tens of millions of strokes, and delivering consistent performance, you’ve nothing to worry about here. I talk about the steel frame a lot, but the rigid chassis also means the keyboard doesn’t flex or have feedback throughout the keyboard while you’re typing, which gives it a solid and consistent typing action.

I think it would be nice to see them roll out an RGB version next, as we know consumers love their customisation, but I respect that HyperX went for performance first, rather than adding extra features that won’t make you a better gamer, but would put a bigger dent in your wallet.

Pros

  • Durable steel chassis construction
  • Now comes with a choice of 3 Cherry MX Switch types (Red, Blue, Brown.)
  • Detachable braided USB cable
  • Extra slim no bezel design
  • Built-in multimedia and lighting controls
  • No software needed, just plug and play
  • LED lighting
  • Custom FPS gaming key caps included

Cons

  • None

Neutral

  • The price may seem a little higher than most, but the build quality is to a much higher standard than most too, so it’s easily justified

“The HyperX Alloy FPS may not make you a world champion overnight, but if you want to ensure you’re playing at your best, you’ll want the fast, durable and overall reliable Alloy FPS for all your gaming needs.”
