HyperX Demonstrates Savage EXO USB SSD at CES 2018

Kingston’s HyperX division had more than their Fury RGB SSD with them to CES 2018, they also brought the Savage EXO. The Savage EXO is an external SSD for those who also want speed when they’re on the go.

HyperX Savage EXO USB SSD

The HyperX Savage EXO has an unusual look, that’s for sure. It fits the general HyperX scheme well with its edgy design. On the inside beats a SATA SSD at the heart. So while the drive does feature USB 3.1 Gen.2 connectivity, the drive itself limits the performance.

But even with those performance limits, we get a fast drive which easily is four times faster than a portable HDD. The Savage EXO promises up to 490/480 MB/s read/write throughput, and that isn’t bad at all for a pocket-sized drive.

HyperX is a gaming division and one of the suggested ideas of usage is for gaming consoles. You can easily expand the limited internal capacity with an external drive like this. As the drive is offered with 480GB and 960GB options, there will be plenty of space for all your games. That said, there’s nothing holding you back from using it any other way you’d like. It could be a backup drive for your important files, a way to transport media forward and back, or something else.

The Savage EXO doesn’t consume a lot of power due to the SSD components which eliminate the need for an external power supply. It gets data and power through the normal USB cable. There’s both a Type-C and a Type-A cable included which is nice. Type-C is for modern systems while the Type-A offers backwards compatibility with older USB host ports.
