Premier overclocker der8auer partnered with Asus to push Intel’s new Core i7-8700K to a record-breaking 7.3GHz on all cores. He achieved the impressive feat using the Asus ROG Maximus X Apex motherboard, plus lashings of liquid nitrogen, of course. However, just hours after der8auer’s achievement, a young pretender broke his record. HWBOT user Kovan Yang set the new record of 7.405GHz on all cores.
Intel’s new Coffee Lake-S powerhouse is widely considered the most overclockable CPU on the market.
Working with Asus, der8auer overclocked a delidded i7-8700K to 7.3GHz on all six cores and twelve threads. In fact, the speed effectively doubles the CPU’s base frequency:
Asus’ overclocking exercise is to showcase its new ROG Maximus X Apex motherboard. Asus says:
“ROG is obsessed with chasing the highest overclocks and fastest performance. We take these pursuits so seriously that our engineers created a series of Apex motherboards specifically for setting records. The first iteration appeared in the Maximus IX family for Z270 and broke both frequency and benchmark records for Kaby Lake CPUs. Now, its Maximus X Apex successor has arrived with Z370 and Coffee Lake. Our in-house experts have been hard at work setting new records that cement the Apex’s status as the top overclocking motherboard for Intel processors.”
Mere hours later, Yang posted a new i7-8700K overclocking record to HWBOT. Specifically, Yang achieved 7.405GHz on all cores:
