IBM develops worlds biggest hard drive

IBM is one of the world’s best known technically specialist companies and they have been breaking the boundaries of current technology again. They have constructed a single hard drive unit made up of multiple individual hard drives, 200,000, to be exact with a combined storage capacity of 120 PetaBytes. To put that amount in context every single thing on the internet could be backed up 60 times with that amount of storage.

A 120 PetaByte drive could hold 24 billion music MP3 tracks at 5MB each but it is unlikely the developers IBM Almaden had such a use in mind. Developing this monster for an unnamed client it is believed the massive storage device will be used to help perform simulations on weather trends and climatology. The device can store in excess of 1 trillion files so it is certainly up to the job. IBM didn’t specify how much the device cost to make but you can only imagine the scale of the cost of such a project.
