Icy Dock MB559U3S SuperSpeed External 3.5″ SATA Hard Drive Enclosure Review

With the price of hard drives now coming down to a point where they are easily affordable once more, I can imagine that the uptake on buying enclosures and drives separate will start to become more common but as with all things, it comes down to the end users needs, meaning that for some, the preconfigured drives are just as good ie, as long as it has the capacity then that’s what matters.
The sleek design of the enclosure is a bit hit with myself and I’m sure that others will agree. Its minimalistic yet stylish. Having such a slim frame means that the enclosure take up very little real estate on your desk and its lightweight build also means that even with a hard drive installed, its not the biggest and most cumbersome option to take from point to point.
There are a few external enclosures out there that offer support for upto 2TB drives and with 3TB drives becoming more and more popular, its great to see that the SuperSpeed enclosure offers support for upto 3TB of storage although 4TB is a bit off limits for the time being. This is naturally another tick in the box for the deciding list when looking around at the options.
Pricing wise we see the MB559U3S SuperSpeed enclosure appearing on the shelves at around the £50-60 mark, which may seem a lot for an empty enclosure, but for this you get a high quality product that will last for a number of years, offering speeds that are just as good as a pure SATA connection from a company that has a great reputation for its products.
Bottom line, I’ve seen many enclosures that offer up a stylish design but suffer in other areas or vice versa and there are only a small number that can offer both, this being one of the latter group. Whilst this as mentioned above may seem a bit more expensive, being an Icy Dock product, you know that it’ll stand true to its word and will do exactly as it says on the box, and therefore I’m happy to give this our editors choice award.
