IMAX Is Raising $50 Million for High-Quality VR Experiences

Canadian theater company IMAX has shown a real interest in developing amazing virtual-reality experiences for us to enjoy, but as you can probably imagine, these kinds of endeavors usually require a lot of cash. The good news is that IMAX has a lot of money to spend, as the company has recently finished phase one of a special effort that aims to raise no less than $50 million for VR. This money will be used to create “at least” 25 premium VR experiences for various platforms, and these include dedicated IMAX VR locations. Obviously, IMAX made a serious financial contribution for this project, but there are other well-known companies who also helped out quite a bit.

These include Acer, which has known links to IMAX partner Starbreeze, as well as the Creative Artists Agency, and three Chinese media firms named Enlight Media, Studio City and China Media Capital. It’s true that VR still needs a bit more time to mature, especially when it comes to implementing it in theaters. However, IMAX is well on its way to create experimental IMAX VR centers at various theaters in the UK and US. If these centers turn out to be a success, there’s going to be an increasing demand for content, which can only mean good things for consumers who are eagerly anticipating IMAX’s new VR ventures.
