Have you been blown away by the Ryzen 7 series? Left warm and fuzzy by Ryzen 5? Perhaps you’re waiting for the budget friendly Ryzen 3? They’re all offering something exciting, but there’s someone on the horizon that goes way beyond what they have to offer.
The newly revealed Threadripper features up to 16 cores and 32 threads. That’s freaking insane, and I can only imagine the kind of performance this will offer when it comes to rendering, transcoding, and any calculation heavy workloads.
We’re eager to see more of this monster CPU, but with AMD promisingly to debut the new processors at Computex, we should only have a few weeks to wait before we see it in action.
This new processor is set to compete with the HEDT chips from Intel. Intel have their X299 Skylake X CPUs which are set to feature 12 cores, so AMD could have the lead here. While Ryzen 7 offered a lot of features on X370 motherboards, this chipset will offer quad-channel DDR4 support, more PCIe lanes, and more storage. This makes it more appealing for those building high-end workstations.
Threadripper is shaping up to be extremely exciting. With the launch of X299 and Threadripper ahead of us. 2017 could finally see AMD take back that top spot for the first time in well over a decade.
