Indie Dev Claims Current Gen Consoles Are Not Weak

The lengthy nature of the previous console generation dramatically increased the performance deficit to the PC platform and made it challenging for developers to push the technical boundaries. Also, console makers this generation didn’t launch the systems at a loss as a way of driving sales. This meant the hardware wasn’t overly powerful to help maintain a reasonable price point. Interestingly, both Sony and Microsoft have taken a bold step and decided to unleash more powerful units mid-generation. This is the first time two versions of the same console have existed and suggests that the notion of one specification over time isn’t viable anymore. Perhaps this is due to the rise of PC gaming and threat of mobiles.

In an interview with GamingBolt, Andrea Farid Marsili, Programmer and CEO of Marslit Games discussed the idea of an iterative console cycle and said:

“I don’t think that this is going to be the future. In my opinion, PS5 and the next Xbox will have some modularity like interchangeable CPU/GPU,”

Unbelievably, Marsili didn’t acknowledge the current consoles lack of horsepower and claimed:

“I don’t think that the current consoles are weak. The real problem is that people always want more and they want it now, they can’t and don’t want to wait.

“This is why we see 10GB patches on day one,”

Even though some users are content with the experiences the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are capable of, it’s clear that console gamers have become more interested in the technical side. Nowadays, it’s quite common to see console players comparing versions and discussing the frame-rate. The idea that the original consoles are not outdated is lunacy, especially when you consider the Xbox One couldn’t run certain games like Watch Dogs above 720P.  Personally, I think the concept of consoles mid-generation illustrates how the traditional console strategy needs to change.
