Last week, we were treated to a massive leak from AIDA64 that basically revealed the entire GeForce GTX lineup for Pascal. That leak suggested that the GTX 1060 would be its own separate die, using the GP106 with 1280 CUDA cores. As part of the ongoing launch of Pascal, Inno3D may have inadvertendly revealed that the GTX 1060 will not be coming as soon as expected.
From the Inno3D slide, we can see that there is a third Pascal GeForce card that is set to launch during this transition period. This means within the next month or so, we should expect a new Pascal GeForce card to fell in between the GTX 1070 and GTX 960. On suggestion is that this card is the GTX 1060. However, if Nvidia were to release the GP106, they would likely also release the GTX 1050/1050Ti at the same time, since die harvesting would allow for such a card.
Given that there is no GTX 1050/1050Ti in the works, I’m thinking that the unnamed Pascal card is using the same GP104 die powering the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070. Rumours have pointed to a third GP104 die, the GP104-15, the perfect chip for the GTX 1060Ti. With 1536 CUDA cores and a 192bit bus, the card would fit snugly between the GTX 1070 and GTX 1060. With fewer shaders and even more bandwidth bottlenecked, it wouldn’t take away from the GTX 1070. At the same time, with more shaders and bandwidth than the GTX 1060, it would remain more powerful and compelling offering.
The big question, of course, will be pricing. The main challenger in this segment is AMD’s upcoming Polaris 10. That chip is rumoured to offer GTX 980-980Ti levels of performance, right where we expect the GTX 1060 Ti to fall. With Polaris set to launch in just hours, it will be interesting to see how the battle will play out between the two.
