According to a report by Tom Waddington there are mentions of an “Instagram video” service in the code of the Instagram service. This apparently means we will see Facebook unveil the Instagram video service at an event which it has planned for June 20th.
The company has invited members of the press to the event tomorrow but gave no indication of what the event is about. It is believed Facebook is developing the video feature to combat the success of Twitter’s Vine service after that has had massive success and is catching up with Instagram, or even overtaking it in some cases.
According to a second report by AllThingsD the event tomorrow will only be used to launch the new Instagram video platform. Like Vine Instagram videos are expected to be limited in length but it remains to be seen how Facebook will differentiate its offering from Vine and most people are already expecting a mere imitation. Yet since Vine got in their first we could easily see it stay more popular as a video service, though Instagram still has a large user base so could battle through in the end.
