Most have probably heard by now of Intel’s mobile ambitions. By mobile we mean actual mobile phones and smart phones not mobile processors for laptops or netbooks. Intel will have two models of Medfield Atoms available for the smartphone market this time round. The Atom Z2460 and Z2000 are the two models planned, of which the Z2460 is the fastest and Z2000 is the slowest. Intel has managed to get together three partners so far, Orange, Lava and ZTE. The Z2000 will offer speeds up to 1GHz while the other two will offer speeds up to 2GHz presumably with turbo mode functions. The slowest Z2000 processor will be aimed at the sub $150 phone market.
Intel is slating the 22nm phone processors for 2013 next year and the 14nm ones in 2014. The Z2580 smartphone processor will offer up to 2X the performance over the Z2460 processor by using 22nm architecture instead of 32nm. Intel didn’t elaborate any details on the 14nm progress except that it is ‘in development’. We are still unsure about how well the phone market will recieve ‘Intel Inside’ of their phones but if the price is right it is sure to be a success.
