After years of maxing out at 4 cores, Intel is set to upgrade their mainstream platform. Coffee Lake, the upcoming Kaby Lake successor, will feature up to 6 cores on the LGA 115X platform. With AMD in resurgence due to their Ryzen processors, having Coffee Lake be competitive is more important than ever. Luckily for us, we now have a glimpse of the chips upcoming performance.
As noted earlier in the week, Coffee Lake is a tweaked version of the Skylake/Kaby Lake architecture. It will feature the same 14nm+ process used in Kaby Lake but feature an updated microarchitecture. The six core model features HyperThreading for 12 threads. The chip is clocked at 3.19 GHz base and has 12MB of L3 cache. This matches up with leaks that came out earlier in the week.
The leaked result in Geekbench comes courtesy of MSI in what appears to be an accidental disclosure. The chip was tested on an MSI motherboard on the LGA 1151 platform, suggesting a 200 series board. For the single core, the chip scored 4619 points while multi-core performance came in at 20828 points. We have no indication if the chip boosted or not but its more likely than not that it did.
For comparison, AMD’s six-core Ryzen 5 1600X scores 4574 points in single core and 20769 points in multi-core. The Ryzen 5 1600X clocks in at 3.6 GHz base and 4.0 GHz boost, giving it a slight clock speed advantage. One has to keep in mind that the Coffee Lake chip reportedly boosts to 4.2 GHz, accounting for some of the lead in single core performance. Intel has claimed a 30% improvement over Kaby Lake for Coffee Lake, driven largely by increased clock speeds.
As expected, Intel’s performance is good as always. The company has been building hexacore processors since Sandy Bridge so this is nothing new for them. However, consumers will finally get a taste of 6 Intel Cores on the mainstream platform. All Intel needs to do now to be competitive is to price their chips well against AMD’s offerings.
