The next generation Intel “Coffee Lake” desktop CPU line was officially unveiled on August 22. However, it is not available for purchase yet or are benchmarks from media outlets ready. This leaves users wondering just how much of an improvement the latest generation processors bring. What is known is that Intel is bringing up the core-count from four to six on the top end models. Moreover, the lower end i3 models are also getting quad-core versions from the typical dual-core count.
SiSoft Sandra has an official live ranking feature built into its benchmark, which makes it ideal for seeking out leaks. Testers and reviewers are supposed to disable that feature before running benchmarks, but once in a while somebody forgets. Which is fortunate for every one else since we can see the results ahead of the embargo date. The latest leak shows a pair of Coffee Lake CPUs have their Sandra benchmarks go live: The flagship i7-8700K and i5-8400.
The benchmarks include the Processor Benchmark suite, which is also convenient since comparison numbers for existing processors is readily available. The 8700K vs the 7700K shows the following improvements:
That is actually quite significant, but keep in mind the clock speed and higher core-count.
As for the i5-8400 (first six-core i5) vs the i5-7600K, the performance jump is also surprisingly good as well. This certainly makes the next gen release quite interesting.
