Intel Confirms B460/H410 Will NOT Support Rocket Lake-S

Despite the fact that Intel has officially announced its upcoming Rocket Lake-S processors, it’s still something of a moderate mystery as to when they will officially be released. I mean, Intel’s official line is Q2 2021, but that’s hardly an exact date is it?…

In something that we do know for certain, however, following a report via Videocardz Intel has categorically confirmed that Rocket Lake-S, despite sharing the same LGA1200 socket platform, will not be compatible with B460 or H410 motherboards.

Intel Rocket Lake-S

As you might expect, if you own a Z490 or H470 motherboard, getting Rocket Lake-S to work will be as simple as updating the BIOS (albeit, make sure in most instances that if you’re upgrading, that you do this prior to the swap). Hardly unexpected news there, right?… Well, in something of a double whammy, however, if you own one of the more entry/mid-tier motherboard model designs (H410/B460) it would appear that Intel is either unwilling or unable to offer compatibility for you.

What Do We Think?

Now, of course, if you’re planning to get Rocket Lake-S alongside a Z590, B560, or H570 motherboard, you should be ready to go right out of the box. However, this news will undoubtedly be disappointing to some of you who went for more modest last-gen motherboard designs and were eying-up their upcoming 11th-gen processors with more than a little passing curiosity. – Then again, this is Intel after all, and perhaps more than anything, we should largely be thankful that they have at least stuck with the LGA1200 socket (in a broad sense) for a little longer than usual.
