It’s not so much a case of being ‘well-known’ as rather a foregone conclusion that Intel was going to both launch and release its upcoming 13th-gen Raptor Lake desktop processors at some point around September/October this year. In terms of its laptop variants, however, many believed that this would likely happen in early 2023 as possibly some form of keynote announcement at CES. – Typically speaking, this is exactly what has happened in the past when Intel releases a new processor generation.
Following a report via Videocardz, however, it seems that Intel has not so much surprised the community as shocked it as they have categorically confirmed that Raptor Lake mobile (ie. laptops featuring their 13th-gen processors) will be released before the end of this year!
As part of the announcement, Intel has said:
“We are building on Alder Lake leadership with Raptor Lake in second half of this year and Meteor Lake in 2023 […] To date, we’ve shipped well in excess of 35 million units of Alder Lake. Within the current market, we are also seeing relative strength in the premium segments we serve across consumer and commercial. We expect to build on this momentum with the launch of our next-gen product family – Raptor Lake – starting with our desktop SKUs this fall, followed by our mobile family by end of year. The Raptor Lake family will offer customers significant advantages, including doubledigit performance gains gen-on-gen and socket compatibility with Alder Lake. And in 2023, we will deliver our first disaggregated CPU built on Intel 4 – Meteor Lake – which is showing good health in both our and our customers’ labs.”
Now we should, of course, note the use of the word ‘launch’ and, not for the first time, highlight that there is a huge difference between a product launch and a product release. The former is simply official confirmation of its existence whereas the latter is it’s being available to purchase. Even when acknowledging this distinction, however, it’s still incredibly surprising to get confirmation that Raptor Lake mobile will be officially confirmed before the end of 2022. As noted above, typically speaking, this is usually reserved for CES with a subsequent release of around February.
With this in mind, therefore, CES 2023 might actually, rather than showcasing the launch of Raptor Lake mobile, have AIB partners such as Dell and HP actually revealing new laptop models featuring the processors, with, presumably, a release date for late January/early February. So, if you’re in the market for a new laptop, the good news is that big things might be coming significantly sooner than practically anyone was expecting!
