Intel Core i7-7700K Reaches 6.7GHz on LN2

Intel’s Kaby Lake architecture is just around the corner and as each day passes more information begins to leak regarding performance, IPC improvements and overclocking ability. The latest piece of information comes from HKEPC and shows the Intel Core i7-7700K running at a whopping 6.7GHz on LN2. As you can see, this was achieved with an x67 multiplier and the bus speed was kept at the standard 100MHz. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to see the voltage reading but it’s probably going be really high given the use of LN2 cooling. To be clear, even though this seems like a huge figure, it’s expected for LN2 and the i7-6700K almost surpassed 7GHz at one point. This particular overclock was performed on an ASRock Z170M OC Formula motherboard and GALAX HOF DDR4.

On another note, a post from facebookHK details the i5-7600K’s overclocking headroom when using an air cooling solution. Interestingly, the CPU was able to reach 5.1GHz via the ASUS Maximus VIII Gene and relied on an X40 multiplier and 127.51MHz bus speed. Also, the voltage hovers around 1.504V and we can see the maximum TDP is 91W. The chip’s voltage rating is what I’d expect given the frequency and it will be interesting to see how warm the CPU becomes under load. Judging from the screenshot, it seems only the idle thermal data is provided. Whatever the case, both CPUs appear to overclock quite easily in a similar fashion to Skylake.
