Intel Core “Skylake” Processors Are Officially Available for Purchase

Two of Intel’s brand new “Skylake” processors, the Core i7-6700K and the Core i5-6600K, are officially available for purchase starting today, August 14, 2015. As these processors require new motherboards, namely LGA 1151 ones, some retailers have decided to bundle them with compatible motherboards and even DDR4 memory. Impressive as the bundles may be, some of you will probably want to purchase the processors on their own, in which case you’ll have to pay $250 for the Core i5-6600K and $343 for the Core i7-6700K.
The Core i5-6600K is a quad core without Hyperthreading that boasts 6 MB of L3 cache as well as standard 3.50 GHz clocks that can go up to 3.90 GHz in Turbo Boost mode. The more powerful Core i7-6700K comes with Hyperthreading, 8 MB of L3 cache and a standard operating frequency of 4.00 GHz, while its Turbo Boost frequency sits at 4.20 GHz. Both of these chips feature unlocked base-clock multipliers, which means that they are ready to be overclocked. However, they are not accompanied by any form of cooling solution, which means that users will have to install their own. The TDP for these chips is rated at 91W, so finding a reliable LGA115x-compatible cooler shouldn’t be all that difficult, especially if the user doesn’t plan to overclock. A few more quad-core i5 SKUs are set to be released on August 29 while Intel’s new dual-core i3’s will arrive at the end of September.
