Released earlier this year, AMD’s Ryzen 5800X3D processor proved to be a huge hit not only in terms of gaming benchmarks but also with consumers looking for a potent last-hurrah with the AM4 socket. – It genuinely created problems for Intel and predominantly in the fact that their former domination of the gaming processor market was, at the very least, coming firmly under attack!
Of course, following the release of their 13th-gen Raptor Lake CPUs, Intel has once again established itself back at the top of the list. – Following a report via TechPowerUp, however, it seems that the overall concept of AMD’s X3D platform has Intel worried enough to actually delay their 14th-gen Meteor Lake into 2024!
According to the leak source, Intel has reportedly decided to offer a more potent refresh of its Raptor Lake line-up in late 2023 in place of Meteor Lake to offer what they potentially consider to be a better defence against AMD’s upcoming X3D processor releases. – And lest we forget, the Ryzen 7000 series is not just the only platform to get new X3D CPUs as AMD has already confirmed that further AM4 Ryzen 5000 models featuring X3D cache technology will also be released.
And in regards to sticking with AM4, this is an incredibly smart move by AMD as the transition to their new AM5 socket has so far proven to be sluggish at best with a lot of consumers still on their ‘last-gen’ Ryzen platform. – As I write this (as an AM4 user) I still view the 5800X3D as a better upgrade option than paying for the transition to AMD AM5 or Intel LGA1700.
Put simply though, it doesn’t appear that Intel is going to have any notably major new processor releases set for 2023 (well, outside of the remaining Raptor Lake models which are likely to drop in January/February). They are, instead, hoping that tweaking and improving their current Raptor Lake designs for a later revised release will prove enough to at least buy them some time to get Meteor Lake even better!
Overall though, aside from what AMD has to offer us with X3D in AM4 and AM5, it looks like 2023 is going to be a relatively quiet year for Intel. – Well, providing this leak is proven accurate!
