Intel’s mainstream family of SSD scheduled for Q1 2013 certainly looks interesting, extremely costly, but interesting nonetheless, as the highest model of the codenamed Wolfsville SSD line will hit 1.6TB in capacity.
Not much is known, apart from the standard format of a 2.5″ drive with SATA 6Gbps interface, it will be based on 20nm MLC chips. Time of release is Q1 2013, and it should come in a variety of capacities, starting at 60GB, up to the above mentioned 1.6TB.
This new series of drive should end up with a 500 series branding, which could also replace the 520 series. The 520 series itself, even though “only if necessary”, should end up replacing the 320 series during the half of this year.
No performance number can be put on Wolfsville currently, however expect the top capacity to go through the roof. Currently, the largest Intel drive you can find is the 320 series 600GB (2.5″ SATA 3Gb/s, 25nm, MLC), which sells at $1,139.99. Even though price of the SSDs is expected to drop in 2012, large drives will continue to cost quite a lot.
