Next month, Intel will launch their new 8th generation lineup. The new Coffee Lake processors will come with the new top end Z370 chipset and new motherboards to go with it. To start things off Intel is releasing a total of 6 SKUs for the mainstream platform. As this latest news now shows, if those 6 SKUs don’t fit your needs, you may have a long wait ahead of you.
According to the new set of leaked slides, Q1 2018 will be the launch date for the rest of the lineup. More specifically, this means February 2018 which is just under 6 months away. At that point, we will have three new chipsets in the H370 Express, B360 Express, and the H310 Express.
Compared to Z370, the H370 just lacks CPUs overclocking and SLI support. B360 trims the connectivity down some more with H310 being the slimmest. These lower-end chipsets are often preferred by budget gamers due to their lower cost. With Ryzen being an option, this means budget-oriented users will have less incentive to wait due to this uncharacteristic delay.
In addition to the new chipsets, Intel will release more 8th gen processors as well. These will be the budget 2 core 4 thread Pentium models as well as low power S versions of the i3/i5/i7. To fill in the budget gap, Intel will release low-power Gemini Lake Celerons and Pentiums. With the IPC improvements made to Gemini Lake, they are approaching the minimum performance for office work.
Last of all, Intel will be releasing new Optane SSDs. The new Optane 900P features capacities in 240GB and 480GB. Given the increased size, the drives likely use 3D NAND rather than 3D XPoint. It will be interesting to see if they remain cache SSDs as well. Finally, it’s important to note that all of this information is subject to change. Intel is not beyond making changes to their schedule in the next 6 months.
