Although chip-giant Intel is excited about their Optane memory technology, they have not forgotten about other solid state drive solutions. Their latest product is called the Intel SSD 545s, a mainstream SATA-based drive that uses a Silicon Motion SM2259 controller. Most importantly, the Intel SSD 545s is the first product to make use of a 64-layer 3D TLC flash. For a mainstream drive, the Intel SSD 545s looks very sleek in its aluminum enclosure. It also comes with a long 5-year warranty, which is unusual for a mainstream TLC NAND drive. What the drive is aiming for is as a hard drive replacement for those who are still clinging to platter drives for OS use.
The drive is currently only available in 512GB capacity, but Intel is planning on adding 128GB to 2TB capacities later on. An M.2 form factor will also be available. For now, the 512GB 545s can be had for $179 USD via NewEgg.com.
