Slides from Intel reveal a possible solution for the users envious of Apple’s Retina display. Such a solution could arrive as soon as next year.
Published by Liliputing, the slides show the chipmaker believing that the devices with high pixel densities will offer 220-300 PPI, this on basically every piece of technology featuring a display. According to the same slides, such a display could arrive in 2013.
The slides show the various pixel densities and resolution for each screen sizes. Handheld devices with a viewing distance between 12″ to 16″ will sports a pixel density of approximately 300 PPI, giving a 5″ smartphone a resolution of 1280×800 while the 10″ tablets would feature 2560×1440. In comparison the iPhone 4 and 4S have a resolution of 960×640 (326 PPI) while the third-gen iPad had 2048×1536 (264 PPI).
Moving in the larger devices, those viewed at 16″ to 24″ will sport a pixel density of around 250 PPI. In this section you find the 11″ and 13″ Ultrabooks with resolutions of 2560×1440 and 2800×1800 respectively. As for the 15″ notebooks and 21″ all-in-ones with a viewing distance of 24″ to 30″, they will feature a resolution of 3840×2160.
Intel isn’t only looking for higher density and resolution, the company is also looking to improve on all parts of the technology, including good viewing angles, a high color gamut, cheaper touchscreens, improved power efficiency, as well as thinner and lighter panels.
Liliputing also notes that this increase in pixel density is also brought forward by the support from Windows and other OSes. If we were to raise the resolution to 3840×2160 pixels on a 15″ screen equipped with Windows 7, the things such as text would be too small for comfortable viewing. Adjusting the platform’s DPI would eventually fix such an issue but that would produce subpar graphics. Windows 8 on the other hand, is expected to scale better, especially in the touch-oriented Metro interface.
