This summer, Intel is set to launch their new Coffee Lake processors. The 8th Gen Core series CPUs replace the current 7th gen Kaby Lake units. Until today, Intel did not confirm any launch dates or release dates. All we had was leaks pointing to a late Summer 2017 launch. In an uncharacteristic move, Intel is finally revealing their Coffee Lake launch date. On August 21st, the company will unveil the new lineup via Facebook Live.
Coffee Lake uses the 14nm process from Kaby Lake and the architecture from Skylake. Intel has further optimised the design, claiming a 30% performance increase from the same power draw. Part of this performance increase is likely due to an increased core count. The top mainstream core count goes from 4 cores 8 threads to 6 cores and 12 threads. The mobile core counts are also expected to increase as well.
While Intel has not explicitly confirmed the August 21st event as Coffee Lake, it is pretty certain. Afterall, the 8th gen should be Coffee Lake. Various leaked slides have pointed to the new processors arriving in late summer. There have even been Coffee Lake pre orders for mobile laptops shipping in late August. The only real question we have left is how much of the lineup will be revealed. Intel traditionally launches the mobile segment first so it remains to be seen if desktop chips show up on the 21st.
Even if Intel does not launch the desktop lineup, we will get more details about the Coffee Lake architecture. Based on mobile performance, we can scale the numbers for the desktop chips. The new chips are not expected to change the architecture under the new PAO cycle. However, Intel may yet surprise us with some tweaks. Be sure to tune in on the 21st as we finally see Intel’s response to AMD’s Ryzen.
