This week in London, during the IPTV World Forum, Intel took the chance and unveiled its new Atom CE5300 media processor.
The Atom CE5300, codenamed “Berryville”, is part of the System on Chip (SoC) series which, according to Intel, are designed to power the next generation of set-top boxes and media gateways. However, at this stage, very little is known, but so far we know that it’s a 32nm dual-core chip supporting hyperthreading and virtualization. Intel also stated that it has an advanced 3D/2D graphics engine, integrated power management and an H.264-B picture hardware encoder incorporated.
“This new chip from Intel will enable you to video conference with friends and family from your big screen TV in the living room. You’ll be able to show your girlfriends your new dance moves without having to worry about getting your laptop camera aimed properly,” Intel said. “Also imagine a great new 3D user interface and console-level graphics for gaming with this high performance chip in set-top boxes.”
The Atom CE5300 will be the company’s fourth generation SoC as well as its first dual-core CE part. When will the shipping begin is completely unknown, so pricing is out of the question for now.
