Intel working with Google to get Android 4.1 support with mobile Atom

Intel has confirmed that it is looking to get support for Android 4.1 “Jelly Bean” on its mobile Atom chips. Google will be assisting Intel in bringing the Android 4.1 OS to smart devices powered by Intel’s Atom, such as smartphones and tablets.

The mobile Atom android 4.1 porting process may take a while and as a result Intel didn’t bind itself to a time frame. Intel chose not to comment when the first Atom powered Android 4.1 products would hit the market, but ultimately it will be a slow process for Intel as they begin the tough transition into one of the most competitive markets.

Intel Atom based devices are likely to get the update to Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” first, before the transition to 4.1 occurs. So far the sum of Intel’s smartphone market penetration consists of three Atom powered phones – the Lava Xolo 9000 in India, the Orange San Diego phone in the UK and an upcoming Lenovo smartphone in China. Atom powered devices from Motorola and ZTE are also expected in the coming weeks.

At the moment devices running on Intel’s Medfield-based Atom processor are based on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which was released in December 2010 and is still the most widely used version.
