Apple has announced the release of the new iPhone 16 series, and while it’s fair to say that the release of a new iPhone is quite the global event it once was, it’s still a big deal for many of their users. There are all the usual updates, with a more powerful processor, improved camera functionality, and that fancy new Camera Control button on the side, to name but a few of the big selling points.
The improved camera system features a 48MP Fusion camera with a 2x Telephoto option, as well as a new Ultra Wide camera which can be used for macro photography. This will all be aided by the new A18 chip, promising greatly improved performance, efficiency, and gaming. Whether you opt for the 6.1-inch iPhone 16 or the larger 6.7-inch iPhone 16 Pro, the OLED Super Retina XDR display with its Dynamic Island should maintain Apple’s reputation for quality displays. Plus there’s the new Action Button, which is effectively a macro key for the camera, flashlight, or controls, and it’s nice to see them adding a button rather than removing another one.
Apple says that Siri is now more integrated into the system than ever before, with better language capabilities, making it easier and more flexible to use with both voice and text input. Plus, more Apple Intelligence features are to roll out in the coming months (yeah, they rebranded A.I. like they invented it, classic Apple). This includes Image Playground, Genmoji for contextual emoji generation, a wealth of 3rd party applications, and further integration of ChatGPT and OpenAI technologies.
Apple says that these phones are designed for longevity, boasting durable back glass, water and dust resistance, and regular software updates. The latest-gen Ceramic Shield takes things up a notch, making the front 50% tougher than the first version and twice as strong as any other smartphone’s glass, at least, according to Apple, but I’ll at least take their word that it’s stronger than their previous model. Inside, a redesigned layout makes room for a bigger battery and better heat dissipation, and it makes battery swaps easier, which is always good.
“iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus mark the beginning of a new era for iPhone with Apple Intelligence delivering powerful, personal, and private experiences to our users,” said Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing. “With new ways to discover the world around you and capture memories using Camera Control; a 48MP Fusion camera that gives you two optical-quality cameras in one; a big boost in battery life; and powerful, efficient performance thanks to the A18 chip, this is the perfect time for customers to upgrade or make the switch to iPhone.”
The iPhone 16 will be available in five bold colours: black, white, pink, teal, and ultramarine. They all look pretty gorgeous, but I’m still more interested in the black one, I tend to keep these things pretty simple. The pre-orders begin today, Friday, September 13th at 1 PM, so if you’re reading this, you can pre-order one right now. The devices themselves will be available in a week’s time on September 20th.
However, there are already reports of the Apple Store going down ahead of the launch, so the site is either rammed with customers or someone at Google is trying to DDoS it for a laugh. Either way, it’s all a bit less dramatic than the days-long queues outside their stores.
If you fancy a simpler life, you can order them directly from Amazon too, with prices of £799 for the iPhone 16 or £899 for the iPhone 16 Plus, £999 for the Pro and £1199 for the Pro Max. However, that’s going to be with the base storage configuration, and will of course increase as you move up through the storage options, with a maxed-out Pro Max costing £1599 for the 1TB version.
