Almost every consumer electronic product is manufactured in China or another Asian territory. This is due to cheap labour and extremely long working hours. Factories like Foxconn have been criticised for treating the workforce poorly and putting productivity above people’s mental wellbeing. Of course, the entire picture remains unclear but it seems likely for China to dominate almost every manufacturing industry for some time. Saying that, Apple consulted with two factories responsible for assembling iPhones about creating handsets in the USA. Apparently, the factories are looking into the possibility but Pegatron didn’t sound too enthusiastic:
“Apple asked both Foxconn and Pegatron, the two iPhone assemblers, in June to look into making iPhones in the U.S.,” a source said. “Foxconn complied, while Pegatron declined to formulate such a plan due to cost concerns.”
According to another insider source Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou “had been less enthusiastic due to an inevitable rise in production costs” and quoted as saying “Making iPhones in the U.S. means the cost will more than double.” Given these arguments, it will be interesting to see how the situation develops. Donald Trump famously spoke making Apple creating products in the USA but the irony is, Apple was already looking into this policy. Whatever the case, new manufacturing jobs in the USA would be a great boost for its citizens. Whether or not Apple accepts the financial hit or raises prices, remains to be seen.
