Days after Star Wars: Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow was fired from the job, Variety confirms that J.J. Abrams will take over the helm. J.J. Abrams is a big help in ‘rebooting’ the franchise with ‘The Force Awakens’ after the prequels. Which is why many see the news as a win for LucasFilms rather than a loss after Trevorrow’s departure.
There were reports of Trevorrow disagreeing with LucasFilm execs on the script leading up to pre-production, hence the reason for the termination.
He is not the only director to butt heads with LucasFilm execs however. Legendary director Ron Howard is replacing Phil Miller and Chris Lord on the Han Solo film project this summer. Miller and Lord’s departure followed months of rumours surrounding their constant disagreements with LucasFIlm president Kathleen Kennedy.
Tony Gilroy was brought in to re-write and direct the reshoots for Rogue One. He took over for Gareth Edwards who also had disagreements with LucasFilm producers. Although at this point, history has proven that Gilroy’s ending with Darth Vader mauling down the rebels is a nice touch. It is in fact one of the most memorable scenes in Star Wars history.
J.J. Abrams will share co-writing credits with Chris Terrio, mostly known for Batman v. Superman and the upcoming Justice League movie.
