Jaguar Land Rover’s Self-Driving Cars Will Still Need Human Input

With so many other companies working on developing self-driving cars, it makes sense for Jaguar Land Rover to jump in and invest in this technology as well. To be more specific, JLR is looking to pour $7.9 million (£5.5 million) over three years into autonomous driving technology, but this is where things get a little strange: the company’s self-driving cars will still require human input, at least for a while. You’re probably a bit confused right now, and that’s perfectly understandable. However, there’s a very good reason behind JLR decision, and it has something to do with ensuring a more natural driving experience in the future.

You see, self-driving cars are designed to follow the rules of the road with no exceptions, which is why they might not drive themselves in a way that looks natural sometimes, especially when it comes to roundabouts, intersections or rapidly changing weather conditions. Apparently, by  making sure that humans actually drive these cars for a while, JLR will be able to receive crucial data that will help tweak these autonomous cars to various driving preferences. These driving styles will probably vary from conservative to aggressive, and they will be activated at the touch of a button. However, it will be interesting to see how the company plans to implement more aggressive driving styles without compromising safety.
