The sequel to 1996 sci-fi blockbuster Independence Day is now officially in pre-production, with director Roland Emmerich adding two cast members – one new, and one very familiar.
Liam Hemsworth, brother of Chris ‘Thor’ Hemsworth and star of the Hunger Games series, has been cast as “the son-in-law of Bill Pullman’s President Whitmore,” while Jeff Goldblum returns to play erudite environmentalist David Levinson. Hemsworth is the star name that 20th Century Fox hopes will sell the movie in the absence of Will Smith, who played protagonist Captain Steven Hiller in the first film.
Emmerich announced the news on his Twitter account:
Independence Day 2 is slated for a 24th June, 2016 worldwide cinema release.
