John McAfee Confirms His Twitter Account Got Hacked

John McAfee Gets Hacked

John McAfee is certainly an unusual fellow. Before I continue I should note that that could possibly be one the biggest understatements of the year, but I’ll be charitable for now because it gets worse.

The founder of the McAfee security company, he shot to fame through his flamboyant lifestyle which wasn’t entirely what you would expect from someone who made a good chunk of his fortune in anti-virus software.

While not a particularly notable Twitter user, he does have a significant number of followers. Mostly, I imagine, just waiting to see what happens next. In one of the more bizarre and ironic twists, however, one of the more recent announcements from his Twitter account was an advertisement promoting a Bitcoin exchange. Now, in fairness, John McAfee is known to give a lot of advice and opinions regarding crypto-currencies. He has, however, never so blatantly plugged a particular exchange.

It therefore only led to one conclusion… Yes, John McAfee had his Twitter account hacked.

Confirmed by the man himself

Now, while this might sound a little embarrassing for someone who specialises in security, in a follow-up Twitter post (after he regained control) he did give some reasonable explanation for it. In the post, he said: “Though I am a security expert, I have no control over Twitter’s security. I have haters. I am a target. People make fake accounts, fake screenshots, fake claims. I am a target for hackers who lost money and blame me. Please take responsibility for yourselves. Adults only please.”

In fairness, he does have a point. Given his profile, he is a tasty target for trolls and hackers. I, therefore, have a tiny bit of sympathy and more than a little understanding. Still, funny stuff though.

Oh, and the featured image? Yeah, we at eTeknix don’t need much of an excuse to use this.
