John Romero Releases Another Fantastic Doom Map

John Romero is a co-founder of id software and one of the most iconic figures in video game history. Throughout his career, Romero designed a number of legendary titles including Quake, Hexen, Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. He hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down either and currently working on a new project entitled, BLACKROOM. This particular creation reunites John Carmack and John Romero to create an action-packed first-person shooter set in a holographic simulation gone rogue. In his spare time, Romero has been working on custom maps for the original Doom and released them to the public at no cost. Yesterday, he unveiled the E1M4b map which surrounds the following story:

“With the Toxin Refinery in the rear-view, you make your way to Phobos Mission Control where the computers crunching the data from the Phobos Anomaly are located. You need to use them to gain access to the Phobos Lab, but remember hearing that the computers were tied into all areas of the installation and that you never knew when the environment around you would change. You need to keep your eyes alert to all movement—this place is not what it seems…”

The consensus so far is very positive and looks to continue the excellent work from the previous map. It’s fantastic to see one of the game’s original creators making new content after so many years. Hopefully, John Romero can conjure up new ideas and release a huge range of enticing maps. Of course, quality has to take precedence over quantity, and I’m interested to see the what he has in store for the near future. With the upcoming release of Doom, it might be worthwhile to revisit the original to remember how revolutionary it is.
