20 years ago John Romero promised he was going to make us his b*tch. Well, while he didn’t necessarily deliver on that with Daikatana, he did recently promise to make us bid. Turns out this time he was right as he placed his personal original copy of the Doom 2 floppy disks on eBay.
Yes, John Romero himself sold his copy of Doom 2. This is the original floppy disk version copy of the game. It was also sold from his own personal eBay account. If you don’t believe me, the link is here.
With the bidding starting at $10, they rocketed up to achieve a final price of over $3000. Not bad for a piece of plastic most of us would have thrown away, I wonder if I should send John Romero my old Atari ST games to sell?
The item was sold with the following description;
These are the originally shipped DOOM 2 floppies (3.5″) for PC and compatibles. The version is 1.7 (the first DOOM 2 version). NO BOX included – these are only the 3.5″ disks.
I will sign these disks if you like. |
Unboxed?! the game collecting puritans will be disappointed! Seriously though, this was a great piece of video game memorabilia. I personally treasure my original boxed copy of the 7th Guest.
Not a clue. I guess he just found them and fancied seeing what would happen. It may be due to the recent popularity of the excellent rebooted Doom franchise or indeed the announcement that a VR version was coming.
The blunt answer is, who cares why? it was an opportunity to own a piece (signed if requested) of gaming history directly from the man himself.
If you wanted to jump into this auction, I’m afraid you are too late. It’s all over. The metaphorical eBay hammer has come down and this copy of Doom 2 is gone. Stay optimistic though, you never know what he might sell next. An original Quake?! Wolfenstein 3D?! or maybe just some music he doesn’t listen to anymore.
What do you think? Great product at a great price? or for $3000 did John Romero finally make someone his b*tch?
