Julian Assange Has His Arrest Warrant Appeal Turned Down

Julian Assange

Julian Assange, the founder of the website Wikileaks, had a date with the UK courts in regards to appealing his arrest warrant. Currently, in a form of exile in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, he was hoping to be able to leave without finding the police waiting for him at the gates.

It looks like his stay might be a little longer, however, as his appeal has officially been rejected.

Arrest Warrant

We reported back in January how Mr Assange had lodged the appeal for his UK arrest warrant to be squashed. His grounds for the appeal was based on his warrant in Sweden being dropped last year. That, however, wasn’t the problem. He had been arrested in the UK based on the charges, however, he skipped bail to seek asylum in the Ecuadorian Embassy.

Despite the original charges now being dropped, he broke the law again by not answering bail. A matter the police and courts obviously take very seriously.

Appeal Rejected – With a ray of hope!

In a report via SkyNews, following the hearing at the Westminster Magistrates courts, the arrest warrant has been upheld. Julian Assange must face the courts for failing to answer to bail.

There is, however, a ray of hope for him. The judge has said that while the appeal has, for the moment, been rejected, they will investigate whether maintaining it will be in the public interest.

Will he be able to leave?

It’s distinctly possible. While he is a controversial figure and people’s opinions do vary on the actions conducted on his Wikileaks webpage, the warrant in the UK is more a case of principal. He is, of course, very much a person of interest to the US government.

The response to the previous article was definitely mixed and it seems that there is, in this instance, no clear answer.

What do you think? Should the appeal be granted? Will he ever be able to leave his embassy? – Let us know in the comments!
