Absurdism is based on the fundamental human contradiction of seeking meaning in a meaningless universe. Albert Camus, the absurdist philosopher and author (though, I always preferred his work as a goalkeeper), once said, “Man stands face to face with the irrational. He feels within him his longing for happiness and for reason. The absurd is born of this confrontation between the human need and the unreasonable silence of the world,” which is exactly the sense that the first gameplay trailer for Square Enix’s open world action adventure sequel Just Cause 3 seems determined to evoke.
Just Cause 3 revels in its own meaningless, holding no pretensions that it is anything other than empty thrill. That may sound like a criticism, but it is high praise, an acknowledgement of the game’s existential honesty: there’s no meaning here, but you’re invited – nay, compelled – to keep looking for it. Ultimately, that is the crux of human existence; through such endeavours, we make our own reality, with the game merely holding up a mirror to humanity. If Camus was alive today, he’d have made Just Cause 3.
Or
Just Cause 3 is a dumb, loud action game and it looks really, really fun.
The most impressive element of the Just Cause 3 trailer is that it is all gameplay: no cutscenes, staging, or scripting, just chaotic in-game action, presented with a directorial flourish.
Just Cause 3 is set for release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC at the end of the year.
