It took a while but fighting game Killer Instinct is finally available on Steam. The game was originally available only via Microsoft’s proprietary store for the Xbox and PC. What makes the news even better is that it will have cross-play capability. Meaning players on Xbox and Windows Store version can play against those on the Steam version.
However, there are some limitations to consider. First, only Exhibition, Lobby mode, and Shadow Lords multiplayer mode will have the cross-play capability.
Secondly, there is no ranked match cross-play which is a significant blow to those who are serious gamers.
Third, those with an Xbox One fight stick as well as other Direct Input controllers will not be able to use it on the Steam version. Like the second problem, this affects the majority of serious fighting game enthusiasts. It also does not make sense for this feature to be lacking on the Steam version since the Windows Store version is controller agnostic.
To promote the game on the Steam platform, Killer Instinct is also available currently for 25% off until October 4. That puts the price at only £22.49 in the UK, which is not bad considering it is the Definitive Edition.
