Kindle Fire 2 to get a better display, shipping October onwards

Amazon’s Kindle had a really solid start, yet now sales are starting to drop off as competitors are producing better selling products. As a result speculation now suggests Amazon are already planning a move into a new generation of Kindle Fires. With the new generation Amazon are trying to make it both thinner and lighter, yet give it more punch. The new Kindle Fire 2 is expected to feature a built in camera and a much improved display. Shifting from the current 1024 by 600 display to the 1280 by 800 resolution that the current Google Nexus 7 uses, we can’t help but feel Amazon are going to be a bit late to market. If potential tablet owners are going to wait for a new tablet, they certainly aren’t going to hang around for very long with the very attractive pricing of Google’s Nexus 7.

In addition to the higher resolution, the aspect ratio is expected to change too. This all comes as a result of Amazon telling app developers what kind of screens they will be developing for on the Kindle Fire 2.

DisplayMate President Raymond Soneira told AllThingsD:

The really interesting thing here is that the screen shape is changing slightly: From an aspect ratio of 1.71 (tall and narrow in its standard Portrait mode) to an aspect ratio of 1.60. That’s a 67 percent increase in total pixels, and it is visually significant. It gives the display a PPI (pixels per inch) of 216.

Given the constant advances in display panel technology it is not expected that this shift will have any major negative implications on battery life.
