Kingston DataTraveler UltimateGT USB Drive Costs More Than Most PCs

Kingston has finally launched what is perhaps the most impressive drive seen at CES 2017 earlier this year: The DataTraveler UltimateGT USB drive boasting a whopping 2TB capacity, currently the largest available. It is also considerably larger physically than most thumb drives, measuring 75.18 x 27 x 21.02mm encased in a zinc-alloy die-cast enclosure. It is has transfer rates of up to 300MB/s read and 200MB/s write with a USB3.1 Gen1 Type-A connector that is actually hidden when the drive is not in use but remains covered when the retractable half of the DataTraveler UltimateGT is in the forward position. The transfer rates and capacity make this drive ideal for video editors and other content professionals on-the-go. A 2TB drive may sound impossible to fill for most users but for professionals involved in video production, especially with 4K and 8K RAW video content, a 2TB drive can be filled up with a project’s worth of files easily.

Just how much can you store on a 2TB drive? This handy chart from Kingston might help:

What is most jaw dropping about the DataTraveler UltimateGT 2TB USB flash drive other than performance is its price, set at $1,649 USD (available via NewEgg.com). This prices it on-par with Intel’s high-end desktop processor Core i7-6950X and priced higher than NVIDIA’s current flagship desktop video card, the Pascal GeForce Titan X. Understandably, that is usually the case when something is unmatched on the market, especially one with such durable zinc-alloy construction and a 5-year warranty. The good news is that a 1TB version is also available with the same speeds and specifications priced at a more affordable, but still quite steep $949 USD.
