Kingston Fury BEAST DDR5 5200MHz 32GB (16GBx2) Review

Kingston is one of the best-known names in the business, and they've been making high-performance memory products for decades now, so I think it's fair to say they know what they're doing. I've used a wide range of their products over the many years, and I've certainly been very happy with them. The new kit I'm checking out today is the Kingston Fury BEAST DDR5, which comes in a range of 8Gb, 16GB and 32GB DIMMS with kit sizes of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB to suit your needs. There's a choice of 4800MT/s, 5200MT/s, 5600MT/s, 6000MT/s speeds, and these cover three levels of latencies too; CL36, CL38, CL40. Overall, there should be something for any system and budget here. Kingston Fury BEAST DDR5 The kit I have in for review today is the 32GB (2 x 16GB) 5200MHz with the CL40 latency, so it's on the lower end of the spectrum available here. However, I did recently review the faster 5600 MHz CL36 kit, if that's more your speed, you can check that out here. One of the biggest advantages of all the Fury BEAST DDR5 kits, however, is that they're certified for both Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO, so their overall motherboard support should be pretty significant. Taking speed, capacity and reliability even further, DDR5 arrives with an arsenal of enhanced features, like on-die ECC (ODECC) for improved stability at extreme speeds, dual 32-bit subchannels for increased efficiency and an on-module power management integrated circuit (PMIC) to provide juice where it’s needed most. A Closer Look It's fair to say that the model I have in for today is a more affordable model, so I'm not expecting blistering performance from it, as it's one of the least fast kits we have. I was going to say slower, but this is still a high-end DDR5 memory kit, it's just the others we've tested are faster still. However, the cool thing is that it looks just as great as the more expensive and faster models, with that two-piece black aluminium heat spreader design. There's a good amount of surface area for cooling, they're not true low-profile modules, but they are still very low overall. There are some cut-outs in the spine too, which all for a bit of airflow throughout the DIMMs, but also it just looks good, which I think is the primary intention. There are some details stamped into the aluminium to make them look more futuristic and industrial, or at the very least, less boring. It works well enough though, with zero RGB and a matte black paint job, it's pretty understated by overall good-looking memory. The words Kingston, Beast, and DDR5 are printed on in white. However, the word Fury is raised and machine cut into the aluminium then left unpainted, which looks great! The memory is branded with a sticker on the back, nothing we haven't seen before really. Beyond that though, you'll find the memory comes with a black PCB, sporting Micron memory and ANPEC's power management IC, which are good components but do lean to the more affordable range of the spectrum, which is fine, as that's reflected in the retail price of these modules too; not everyone needs flagship hardware all the time! We put the RAM kit that is being tested into our test system and benchmark it at its first XMP profile using a variety of benchmarks and tests. Once complete, we apply a reasonable overclock where possible and benchmark the same software with the overclocked values. The CPU clock speed is set to default for both runs. AIDA64 When it comes to the performance, it's not looking that great for the Fury Beast. However, this isn't bad performance, I must stress that, as it's performing right where I expected it to. It's the slowest kit, with some of the highest latency timings, so while the AIDA64 scores are slower than everything else, it's not because of bad performance, but because everything else is a more expensive or high-end model; we do get spoilt with some fancy hardware here at eTeknix that can shine an uninstentionally harsh light on more affordable products. Calculation Performance I'm happy with the results here, while not the fastest or slower, it's clearly competitive against some of the much faster modules. Rendering Performance Again, middle of the road performance here, but that's no bad place to be, and it scored higher than the Dominator Platinum! FutureMark Performance Again, really contrasting results here, with one of the better speeds in FireStrike and one of the lower speeds in Time Spy. However, as with the other tests it sort of averages out in the middle for general usage. While this can be used as gaming memory, it's clear that a slightly faster kit such as the Beast 5600 MHz is going to have real-world gaming advantages. However, keep in mind that for the most part, we're looking at about a 3FPS difference. However, I would prefer a lower latency it for gaming to help improve those 1% lows. Overclocking this isn't a particularly high-end kit, so expecting much of an OC would be unreasonable. However, we were able to take them from 5200 MHz to 5400 MHz while maintaining the same timings. This greatly improved the write, copy and latency times, but the read speeds did take a small dip. However, the overall performance was improved. How Much Does It Cost? The Kingston Fury BEAST DDR5 5200MHz 32GB (16GBx2) is on Amazon now for just £137.05. That's a great price and makes it one of the cheapest DDR5 memory kits you can buy, especially for one that's rated for both Intel and AMD platforms. While enthusiast gaming PC builders will likely want the £176.26 kit, most of us will do just fine gaming on the considerably more affordable 5200 MHz model I reviewed today. Overview I think this is a pretty good kit, I mean, that's hardly singing its praises, but it's £40 cheaper than the more gamer-focused model, and comes with a lower profile and better platform support too. If you just need a robust kit that works well on Intel or AMD, won't cause height issues, and is good to your wallet, bam, get it, this is the kit for you. Honestly, I think it looks like a "bad" kit due to the wealth of kick-ass high-end and more expensive models we've tested. It really is a good kit, and given it's the latest DDR5 platform, if you're using this for a low-cost upgrade from a DDR4 system, you're going to reap the benefit easily enough. The overall build quality is decent enough, nothing out of the ordinary, and with Micron memory chips, a black PCB, and a two-piece aluminium heat spreader, there's really not a lot to go wrong here. I appreciate the lack of RGB too, which can often inflate the price of cheaper kits unnecessarily, but RGB is found on the faster 6000 MHz kit though, but again, that costs another £40. Should I Buy One? If you use your PC for daily work tasks, absolutely, there's no reason not to save yourself a few quid and get the Kingston Fury BEAST DDR5 5200MHz 32GB kit. They're decent for gaming too, and you'll have issues using most graphics cards, however, if you're gaming at higher frame rates on flagship GPUs like the RTX 4080 and above, skimping on the memory may not be ideal, and the Beast 6000 MHz kit will help you get the most from the GPU. I'd also go for a lower latency kit if you're doing a lot of calculation-heavy tasks, but that's a pretty small number of users that would need to worry about such things.
