Kingston HyperX Fury DDR4 2666MHz 32GB Memory Kit Review

Introduction When you're building a tower, memory normally gets the last thought; you budget for all of the other key parts and then you find yourself having to readjust when you remember that you didn't add any memory to your basket. With consumer memory kits roughly starting off where DDR3 left off, the speeds are blisteringly fast; some exceeding 3333MHz. Kingston is one of the most well-known memory manufacturers, with many years in the business; it knows its way around a memory module. Kingston produced some of the finest RAM I've ever owned in my personal computers; reliable speeds with great overclocking headroom. Today we look at the HyperX Fury DDR4 memory kit. "HyperX® FURY DDR4 can handle even the toughest battle. It automatically recognises its host platform and overclocks to the highest frequency published (up to 2666MHz1) — so you can wreak havoc. FURY DDR4 runs at 1.2V, even at 2666MHz, so it stays cooler while you play. You don’t need to alter the voltage to reach higher speeds, which means there’s more power for other hardware in the system. FURY’s sleek, asymmetrical black heat spreader provides enhanced thermal dissipation to help keep your cool and help you stand out from the crowd." Let's jump straight into it and see what the kit can really do. Specifications Packaging and Accessories Packing is very similar to the rest of what Kingston offers its memory kits in. Two halves, one black with ridges for the modules and one clear to see the modules. Well, you could see them if there wasn't so many information stickers in the way. A Closer Look A very premium looking memory kit. Pressed metal casing with raised and diamond etched 'HyperX' logo. This is just two of the four modules. Motherboard Installation Pictures RAM is a very overlooked part of the system, but it's always nice to see how it looks when installed into a motherboard. Here is the set installed into our base motherboard, the ASUS RAMPAGE V X99. Black Kingston Fury kit fits in well with the looks of the ASUS Rampage V; however, black modules would look good in most systems, unless it was rainbow themed. Test System and Procedure Methods & Tests In our RAM reviews we keep things relatively simple. We put the RAM kit that is being tested into our test system and we benchmark it at its primary XMP profile using a variety of benchmarks and tests. Once complete we then overclock the kit to see how far we can push it in raw frequency terms, then benchmark it again using the same combination of tests with a CPU-Z validation of the overclock. Test System (Intel X99 DDR4) Motherboard - Asus Rampage V Extreme X99 Processor - Intel Core i7 5960X at Stock With Turbo Enabled RAM - Varies By Review Graphics Card - Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X 4GB Graphics Card CPU Cooler - Thermaltake Water 3.0 AIO unit with Gelid GC Extreme thermal paste Power Supply - Be Quiet Power Zone 1000W Main Storage Drive - Cruical MX100 256GB SSD over SATA III interface Chassis - Lian Li T80 Test Bench Operating System - Windows 8.1 64 Bit Software Used SiSoft Sandra Tech Support Engineer AIDA 64 Engineer 3DMark WPrime CPU-Z Overclocking and Performance The Overclock When we overclock memory kits in our reviews we go for all out frequency, this is primarily done by tweaking the DRAM frequency presets in the BIOS. Once we top out at the highest stable frequency divider we see if any more frequency can be had by increasing the baseclock, or by changing the baseclock (particular relevant for X99). Typically we set timings as the JEDEC profile recommendations for the frequency we are going for, if this does not work we allow auto-timings to be calculated by the motherboard. Normally we will only make small adjustments to the BCLK and timings to keep the system stable, we will also not use more than 1.65 volts for DDR3 and 1.4 volts for DDR4 as this is not recommended for 24/7 operation. This was a breeze to overclock, enable the XMP profile and take it up to 3000MHz. In this screenshot it shows timings of 14-14-14-30, I ran the benchmarks at this and the 'Auto' timings (16-16-16-38) and there was no difference. Cinebench CINEBENCH is a real-world cross-platform test suite that evaluates your computer’s CPU performance. Cinebench R15 is a totally free utility and is available for download here. Cinebench is fairly sensitive to changes in memory frequency and timings. AIDA64 AIDA64 implements a set of 64-bit benchmarks to measure how fast the computer performs various data processing tasks and mathematical calculations. Memory and cache benchmarks are available to analyze system RAM bandwidth and latency. A free version of AIDA64 is available for download here. SiSoft Sandra The SiSoft Sandra memory benchmark is based on STREAM. STREAM is a popular memory bandwidth benchmark that has been used on personal computers to super-computers. It measures sustained memory bandwidth not burst or peak. Therefore, the results may be lower than those of other benchmarks. Download a free trial version of SiSoft Sandra here. WPrime wPrime is a leading multithreaded benchmark for x86 processors that tests your processor performance by calculating square roots with a recursive call of Newton’s method for estimating functions. wPrime is a free utility that is available for download here. WPrime is influenced by memory timings and frequency. 3DMark Fire Strike 3DMark Firestrike is Futuremark’s latest creation for testing the GPU performance of high-end gaming PCs using Direct X 11 graphics. You can download a free basic version of 3DMark here. We use only the Physics score as this is most sensitive to memory frequency and timing changes. Final Thoughts Pricing (accurate at the time of writing) The Kingston HyperX Fury 2666MHz 32GB memory kit can be found at Newegg in the US for $354.99. UK resellers were hard to find, currently only Dabs sell the kit at £271.22. This price includes Kingston's lifetime warranty cover. Summary So today I've had the pleasure of dealing with the Kingston HyperX Fury DDR4 2666MHz memory kit. When I open the packaging, I just knew that this was a kit designed for performance. The overall feel was very solid, possibly one of the heaviest single DDR4 modules I've held apart from the huge HyperX Predator memory kits. The modules didn't stutter once under testing at both stock and overclocked levels and gave some pretty amazing results. The performance was outstanding, in the dedicated memory tests, it was top of the list at both stock and overclocked speeds; that just goes to show that speed isn't everything when you compare the Corsair 2800MHz kit to this. The overclocking headroom I got out of this kit was very good, an extra 'free' 334MHz really brought the kit to life This isn't a Kingston issue, more of an all round DDR4 issue, but the price on these memory kits is still very high. I think with the next iteration of CPU's we should start seeing the phasing out of DDR3 and lower DDR4 prices as a result.
